Mavis, Shih Tzu x Maltese, 2yrs and 2mths, female desexed – Hunter Shelter
Another little dog who has spent 3 months in care. She arrived highly compromised and due to fearfulness and lack of socialisation to the world and people, she is requiring a higher level of management in the home and she will need some gentle behavioural rehabilitation before she will be ready to meet general members of the public.
Poor Mavis is fearful and will tend to flee! She has gone out to foster twice in that time. The first time that she went to foster she went into flee mode and escaped out of a large home in the fence and ran into a dam and attempted to bit the person trying to retrieve her with no marks or broken skin. She was then fostered with the shelter manager where she was began to flee for the first few minutes of being in the home but stopped soon after. She was able to settle in a little bit but was wary of the lead and very unsure with touch. The shelter manager noted “When Mavis first got to my home she went to flight mode, was running around the inside of my home pushing at doors looking for an escape. This lasted for around 3- 5 minutes until she approached my partner for chicken. The rest of the evening she fell asleep by the front door.
This was the only time that she went into flight mode, throughout the rest of the weekend she was happy to be around my partner and me. She would pace around us if we didn’t move her bed into the area we where in. ie if we where in the lounge room and her bed was still in the bedroom she would pace until I went and got it. She would then settle in her bed.”
In shelter she shows a high level of barrier frustration and will bark loudly at dogs that she can see through a barrier.
A modified assessment was completed where she showed a low touch tolerance and needed plenty of opportunities to recover throughout testing. She does recover well when given snuffle mats or other forms of food based enrichment to divert to.
