Additional Information:
Felix, Spitz x JRT, 11yrs old, male undesexed – Sydney Shelter
He has been with us for a very long time (12mths) due to how he came in to care, and finally being released. He did come with other dogs and due to medical procedures he will need to undergo, we are unable to support him in a shelter environment.
Felix is not great with touch and this little guy has been quite feisty in a vet environment, he is resistant to handling around his face but he has allowed eye exam, he has shown resource guarding with food and around his bed if there is food present. The staff have been able to manage him without incident day to day handling and care. He does need plenty of choice and control in his environment and allow to retreat into his own space when he needs. He will let you know very clearly if he doesn’t like something such as moving away from you and if you’re not letting him move away he will sometimes growl and show his teeth. This can escalate quickly. He does walk well on a lead and quite active for someone who is close to 11yrs old. He has had vet consults without aggression displayed. He did have a bite incident the other week due to improper handling while being vaccinated (wound did not bleed but it did puncture the skin and bruising). Felix is typically a quiet dog in his kennel.
Medical:
Requires dental and desex prior to rescue.
Bilateral cataracts – surgery will not be done prior to rescue placement but this can be planned at a later date or rescue can decide if you want to proceed. It is not critical that he has this done now but if it does, he will need to be handled due to post op treatments needed. The current compromise to welfare is mainly due to vision deficits. Possible concerns in the future if this develops complications related to cataracts, may require eye removal, pain can develop and further vision loss.
Trazadone 37.5mg
Gaba 100mg
Weight 9kg
He will need a home without children. He could possibly live with another dog as he has lived with other dogs prior to coming into care.
Due to being an inspectorate case, unfortunately no details of where he is from can be shared on social media but his photo can be shared.
He really doesn’t sound like the best dog does he but we’d love for him to have a chance and live his twilight years in a comfortable home. From recent conversations with the shelter manager he is doing better and not as reactive as he was a few weeks ago. It’s tough being a senior doggie in a kennel for 12mths, we were able to manage him and the previous week’s incident was unfortunate . Losing his vision would not be great either and add to that potential pain common for a senior dog.
