SAD TIMES THIS WEEK FOR HAR
On Sunday six lovely, seemingly healthy, 10 week old pups were rescued from the pound. By Sunday evening one of the pups was unwell, in just hours she was very sick indeed and a trip to the emergency vet revealed the worst. This little girl had parvo! Willow was already so sick that attempting treatment was simply prolonging her pain. Willow made her trip to Rainbow Bridge.
By Monday morning 4 of the five remaining pups were symptomatic and declining rapidly, including Bailey, pictured here. By Monday afternoon only one pup had survived, 5 of 6 puppies were in care for less then 24 hrs.
Those 24 hrs though were full of cuddles and loving attention and testament to the qualities of their foster carers. The little paw prints they left on your hearts may bring tears to your eyes but they will remember the kindness and love and will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.
The surviving pup, little Xander is currently being treated and so far is not getting worse at the rate his siblings did. Xander is undergoing treatment, multiple medications, hydration and monitoring. Last update he was stable, but is still a very sick little pup. We are hopeful this little boy may make it through.
Treatment for Parvo is very expensive and not always successful. Once again HAR urges ALL dog owners to ensure their pets are up to date with vaccinations.

Hunter Animal Rescue supports responsible pet ownership. We encourage all members of the public to have their dogs and cats desexed before their first season. We look foward to the end of overbreeding of companion animals and a time when there is no longer a need for us to rescue animals from the pound.

Puppies, Kittens and their mums need a high quality diet to ensure healthy development. HAR currently has lots of kittens and puppies in care. Litters often require supplimental formula feeds, especially when there are lots of mouths to feed and the mothers must be given additional food to ensure she is able to produce sufficent milk. Mothers/pups and kittens rescued from the pound are generally not in peak condition so their carers spend a lot of time, effort and resources on getting/keeping them healthy.
Puppy and Kitten food is expensive and generally does not come in bulk packaging. 35 of our pups are eating puppy food and 8 are currently on formula supplements and will start to eat solids in 4-5 weeks. Donations of puppy/kitten formula, milk, porridge, biscuits and quality puppy/kitten food are always appreciated.

RENAL CAT FOOD DONATIONS APPRECIATED
One of our senior cats has recently been placed on a special renal specific diet to treat a renal condition which is related to her age. We have recieved donations of renal cat food from kind people who's own cats have passed away and no longer require the special food they were on. We are very greatful and will continue to appreciate any food of this nature as a donation and hope it will enable healing within these kind owners in memory of their little friends who have moved on.

A NOTE TO DOG OWNERS
There is currently a high level of Parvo in the area. HAR urges ALL pet owners to ensure their animals recieve proper vaccinations and yearly boosters. Treatment for Parvo is very expensive and not always successful. Please contact your vet for more info on vaccinations and Canine Parvovirus.

SPECIAL NEEDS CATS AND DOGS
HAR and it's carers look after the animals in care as if they were their own, this includes seeing a Vet for illness or injury. We do not pass these expenses on to the new owners in the adoption price for the dog/cat. Extra Vet expenses are covered by our fundraising and your donations.
RENE
After a trip to the vet to be desexed we were surprised as her to be told she was already 4 weeks pregnant and will be due around the 22nd of August. As you can see she is not too impressed to find out the litter of kittens she entered into Hunter Animal Rescue's care with will not be her last. She is a lovely affectionate cat who just loves cuddles infront of her carers heater and follows them around the house constantly just to keep them company.
The equipment we have for cats and kittens is very basic as we have only begun rehomeing large numbers of cats and kittens late last year. We anticipate yet another mother and her 5 very young kittens will be entering our care in the following week. To support Rene and future mums see how you can help by visiting Rene's Page below. This page will also track the development of mum and when the time comes her kittens.
UPDATE - Poor little Jazzie was making progress but suddenly deterioted and her caring was left with the heart breaking decision to end her pain.
Jazzie's Story
Poor little Jazzie was stuck at the pound for a week. By the Companion Animal Act an unmicrochipped "stray" must remain at the pound for a week prior to release to rescue or adoption. Our Animal Coordinators visit the pound regulary and often take extra food, treats, worm and flea treatments in for dogs that need that little bit extra.
The pound, an unpleasent experience for any dog, did not agree with poor little Jazzie and by her release date she was very underweight. Our coordinator took her straight home for some extreme TLC. A couple of days after her release Jazzie seemed unwell and was taken to the vet.
Jazzie has been in hospital since Friday with haemorrhagic gatroenteritis and has been recieving fluids and antibiotics. She has been receiving round the clock care from the wonderful team at Muswellbrook Vet Hospital
She is now on the road to recovery and hopefully will be back with her carer and back to her happy puppy self very soon.
Please email or put Jazzie as a deposit reference so we know the donation is towards her medical bills
Zoe came in to care scared, confused and heavily pregnant. It took lots of treats and a whole lot of coaxing just to get her into the car for the ride to her foster home. Everyone was on high puppy alert for days untill finally, after several worrying nights and two vet checks, Zoe gave birth to seven healthy puppies.
In addition to the 35 puppies currently in care this litter arrived on the 17/6. Taking the total of puppies in care to 42 spread between 10 foster carers. All of these puppies were surrendered to the pound, born at the pound or born to dogs who were already pregnant when they arrived at the pound!
Raising Puppies is expensive and it's our carers who take on the responsibility and costs. To give you some kind of idea, a single litter of 6 pups and their mum are currently getting thru about 10 kg of mince and a similar amount of "puppy roll" every week in addition to around 2 bags of dry food ...about $10 a day for the last 4 weeks.....and then we need to take into account the treats, bones, toys, bedding and cleaning products etc. Any donations are always greatly appreciated.
Hunter Animal Rescue supports responsible pet ownership. We encourage all members of the public to have their dogs and cats desexed before their first season. We look foward to the end of overbreeding of companion animals and a time when there is no longer a need for us to rescue animals from the pound.
Please email or put Zoey as a deposit reference so we know the donation is towards the care of this lovely little family.
Bon Bon has been in care for close to one year as a senior cat. She not only holds the record for longest cat in care but Bon Bon is the also the oldest (but please don't tell her that) and she is a testament to her carers dedication, optimism and strong love for what Hunter Animal Rescue do.
It has recently been discovered Bon Bon has developed renal insufficiencies of which specialty food greatly reduces side affects of this condition. Unfortunately renal cat food is very expensive. We have already had several very kind donations of renal cat food, all left over food or purchased in memory of individuals own cats who have passed on from similair conditions. As Bon Bon's new diet is making her feel better and better she is eating more and more so we will continue to appreciate any donations of this nature.
