BECOME A HAR "FOSTER FRIEND"
A "Foster Friend" is a caring individual, group or company who makes a donation of funds or goods to a specific animal currently in foster care. Donations can be one off or regular, big or small and can also be made anonymously. If you would like to become a "Foster Friend" for any of our HAR animals simply donate via paypal or directly into our donation account and send an email letting us know who the donation was for.
SPECIAL NEEDS CATS AND DOGS
HAR and it's carers look after the animals in care as if they were their own, this includes seeing a Vet for illness or injury. We do not pass these expenses on to the new owners in the adoption price for the dog & cats. Extra Vet expenses are covered by our fundraising and your donations.

Sharni
Above are some pictures of Sharni. She came into care a few days ago and is in a bad way. She has been vet checked and basically we just need to put some weight on her and get a tooth removed and she should be fine. She was found wandering the streets and is extremely underweight as you can see. She is very friendly and knows to sit and wait for her food already even though she is starving. Her carer says she looks like Hennessy on our Dogs On Trial page. I remember when Hennessy and his brother Quill came into care, the rangers found them dumped out the back of Cessnock near the dump - there was 3 of them but they couldn't catch the third one as it was too scared - maybe this is her. All this time later...
Update from Sharni's carer - 26/5/10
When I first saw Sharni, I was genuinely surprised that she was the same dog I had previously seen in the photos. The ‘photo-dog’ was horribly emaciated, every bone sticking sickly from under her dirty coat. The ‘photo-dog’ was tired and difficult to look at without tears welling, and a darkness forming deep inside. Yet, the Sharni who I met yesterday was not the dog from the photo I had expected. She was happy! She was bubbly! She leapt up the stairs to say hello, and groaned in greeting, her whole body wobbling from the whipping strength of her tail. Sharni was as excited as a pup. Seeing her sweet temperament, I could not know that she has been near starved, mistreated, and abandoned. It was only when I saw her rib cage poking out, and then when I touched her spine, that I remembered Sharni has had a difficult start to life. I held her gentle face in my hands, looking at her bandaged ripped and torn ears and the dozen tiny scars on her face (probably from street fights with other dogs). She flopped her tail furiously, and willingly let me cuddle her.
I brought a 19 kg Sharni home in the car. She complained for about twenty minutes, crying and shaking, until she settled, curled up, and dozed. When we got home, Sharni was eager to explore her temporary surroundings. Unfortunately, she had a couple of instigated rough and tumbles with Pat the Dog, declaring her dominance. We will see how she settles in around other dogs, but so far, she is not showing many positive socialization skills. It may be that Sharni will need to be in an ‘only dog’ family. Sharni is fine however with our two cats (although the cats are very well adjusted to having new strange dogs in their house).
My husband and I will do our best to fatten Sharni up and to train her. She has a fantastic appetite, and she knows how to sit and responds to ‘No’. Sharni is already well on the road to recovery.

Sharni is available for adoption. Visit the Large dogs page for more information.

Chief
Chief was picked up from the pound in pretty bad shape. As you can see from the photos he doesn't have much weight on him, he has multiple flea bites behind his ears, no fur there and fur is also missing from other parts of his body! But despite all of this he still sits down and waits for food (!), doesn't pull on the leash when walked, and is very quiet with his current carer.Chief is available for adoption. Hailey - Rottweiler x
Hailey is a girl with some special needs. So we are looking for a special family willing to put in the long term commitment to Hailey. Like many large dogs her size she grew too fast and her bones and muscles did now grow at the same time. Due to this she has an elbow that has detached cartilage and arthritis. Despite this Hailey could still live a long and happy life, some dogs with Hailey’s condition don’t show any signs of really slowing until around 6 years, but every dog is different.
Hailey will let us know what she can and can’t do. What her new owners will have to watch for is:
How she acts in cold weather – she could be a little slow at starting but will come good, so don’t push her till her leg warms up and keep her a little warmer than most other dogs at night.
Don’t over exercise – after a new or extensive exercise watch to Hailey the next day, if she is stiff and seems sore, then slowly reduce the length of her exercise until she is comfortable with it or change the type of exercise.
Change exercise – again if Hailey has shown stiffness after a particular exercise, change or limit it – i.e. rather than a long run Hailey may be better off with a swim as swimming will take the weight off her leg.
Diet – control Hailey’s diet so she doesn’t become overweight and add more pressure to her elbow.
Medication:
1. Hailey needs to be on arthritis prevention powders or mixes, such as Sasha’s Blend; there are many good ones on the market.
2. Cartrophen injections. This injection aids in the slowing of arthritis, and should be given in a course of injections (1 injection per week for 4 weeks), then leave for months until Hailey shows signs again. Do not do monthly injections. Keep up the daily treatments like Sasha’s Blend.
So what Hailey needs is a family willing to put in that little bit more attention to Hailey’s care.Hailey is available for adoption. Visit the Large dogs page for more information. To donate funds to help the ongoing treatment of Hailey, please either use the PayPal link below

Bon Bon

Bon Bon has been in care for over one year as a senior cat. She not only holds the record for longest cat in care but Bon Bon is the also the oldest at 17 (but please don't tell her that) and she is a testament to her carers dedication, optimism and strong love for what Hunter Animal Rescue do.
It has recently been discovered Bon Bon has developed renal insufficiencies of which specialty food greatly reduces side affects of this condition. Unfortunately renal cat food is very expensive. We have already had several very kind donations of renal cat food, all left over food or purchased in memory of individuals own cats who have passed on from similair conditions. As Bon Bon's new diet is making her feel better and better she is eating more and more so we will continue to appreciate any donations of this nature.
ALL RENAL CAT FOOD DONATIONS APPRECIATED
One of our senior cats has recently been placed on a special renal specific diet to treat a renal condition which is related to her age. We have received donations of renal cat food from kind people who's own cats have passed away and no longer require the special food they were on. We are very grateful and will continue to appreciate any food of this nature as a donation and hope it will enable healing within these kind owners in memory of their little friends who have moved on.
