Hunter Animal Rescue is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers who dedicate their time to finding new homes for abandoned pets facing euthanasia. All animals are kept in foster carer homes, where they experience a good quality of life, and the carers get a good idea of a dog or cat's personality and suitability for different homes.
Please understand that everyone involved in this organisation is a volunteer. We all have jobs, families and usually a home/yard full of animals that need our attention too. It may take a little time to return your call or update the website but we really do the best we can.
Hunter Animal Rescue supports responsible pet ownership. We encourage all members of the public to have their dogs and cats desexed before their first season. We look foward to the end of overbreeding of companion animals and a time when there is no longer a need for us to resuce animals from the pound.
We are looking for the cutest, smoochiest, most adorable, photogenic pets in the Hunter to feature in our

On Sunday six lovely, seemingly healthy, 10 week old pups were rescued from the pound. By Sunday evening one of the pups was unwell, in just hours she was very sick indeed and a trip to the emergency vet revealed the worst. This little girl had parvo! Willow was already so sick that attempting treatment was simply prolonging her pain. Willow made her trip to Rainbow Bridge.
By Monday morning 4 of the five remaining pups were symptomatic and declining rapidly, including Bailey, pictured here. By Monday afternoon only one pup had survived, 5 of 6 puppies were in care for less then 24 hrs.
Those 24 hrs though were full of cuddles and loving attention and testament to the qualities of their foster carers. The little paw prints they left on your hearts may bring tears to your eyes but they will remember the kindness and love and will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.
The surviving pup, little Xander is currently being treated and so far is not getting worse at the rate his siblings did. Xander is undergoing treatment, multiple medications, hydration and monitoring. Last update he was stable, but is still a very sick little pup. We are hopeful this little boy may make it through.
Treatment for Parvo is very expensive and not always successful. Once again HAR urges ALL dog owners to ensure their pets are up to date with vaccinations.
To donate towards Xander's medical expenses please use paypal link to left and email to let us know the donation was for Xander

SMALL
Sparky- mini foxie, M, 1 yr
Sparky is a lovely little Foxy X who has settled quickly into our household. He is excellent with children, loves a cuddle and lots of pats as well as running around chasing squeeky toys with his fellow puppy HAR pal, and our very little dog. We are not sure what he is like with big dogs but know little he likes the little ones. He is a little bit fussy about what he eats, and has sometimes got a reverse sneeze, we are not sure yet what sets this off. He is not a barker but does need a secure fully fenced yard.
Despite Sparky only being with us for a few days he is settling in well, and has a huge desire to please.
If you would like to meet Sparky and think you could be his forever family, please give Cathy a call: 4957 3161

Sopie will still need to interact with kids to see what the go is but she loves to lay around and be cuddled. She is housetrained and lets you know when she needs to go out..
She is gorgeous, loves her walks and makes an easy pet. very undemanding.

PUPPY
ELLIE, (F) - Mastiff x 8 weeks @ 2/7/08, DOB 7/5/08
Ellie is the smallest from a litter of mastiff x puppies and a little quieter than her siblings who are staying with us, who are two bouncy boys. She is also a little shy at times but loves a game with her brothers, a human or a soft toy. Ellie is learning to fetch the ball, and comes when called. As a puppy she still sleeps a lot and if allowed loves to cuddle on a warm knee and dream! She is good with our little dog, cat and chickens.

CAT OF THE WEEK
Kitten- Penny, Female, 14 weeks

HAR 2008 CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION
HAR is looking for the pet of the year!
Why not enter your favourite furkid in our photo competition.
The winning pets will feature on our special 2008 Fundraising cards.
The priority for HAR is rescue animals facing euthanasia at local pounds. Acceptance of surrender animals is dependent on a number of factors, most importantly the availability of an appropriate foster carer. This is the time of year when all pounds have an influx of animals. The pounds we work with are constantly full to capacity, as are our dedicated foster carers, so we are currently rarely able to accept private surrenders.
Dog Surrender
If you need assistance with a dog please call 0401282301. Please give as much detail as you can, including reason for surrender and also the area the animal is located. You can also email details of the animal in need to be included on our "Dogs by Donation pagr. There is no gaurantee we will be able to accept the animal. We suggest in addition to contacting us you also try some of the advice given in the links below.
A $40 surrender fee applies.
Cat Surrender
If you need assistance with a cat please call 0434258260 or email catcarers@hotmail.com There is no gaurantee we will be able to accept the animal. A $40 surrender fee applies.
We also offer a Cat By Private Surrender page where the cat or kitten may be listed to be directly rehomed from your home- for conditions and to submit please click here.
We suggest in addition to contacting us you also try some of the advice given in the links below.
To see a list of Breed Specific and other rescues click here.
Please understand many of the breed rescues are also full so they may not be able to accept your animal.
They may however be able to offer assistance such as listing them on their website.
TEENS COME TO THE RESCUE
by Paige Whalan
Some people in the community don’t know how many puppies go into the pound and never come out. Hunter animal rescue is a not for profit organisation, rehabilitating and re-homing abandoned pets in the
Newcastle area. Foster carers in
Newcastle take in quite a lot of puppies from the local pound.
Foster carer Belinda Roals has had 20 litters of puppies in the last sixteen months, litters of up to nine puppies “All of our carers are volunteers, we all pay for our foster dogs food, toys and bedding.” HAR currently has approximately 55 carers, some who take puppies, some older dogs.
Hunter animal rescue charge an adoption fee for all their dogs. The adoption fee covers the cost of standard vet work including – desexing, micro chipping, vaccination and registration. Any other costs need to be covered by fundraising.
Links to Learning young people are concerned about the protection of puppies so much that they have been participating in activities like making dog treats for fundraisers. They are currently in the process of making dog coats for the pound puppies that need to stay warm in the coming winter.
If you can help be donating fabric or other items such as food, beds and toys. Please email
Events HAR will be attending, come and check out our current dogolouges, meet our fosters or purchase treats from our "Canine Cake Stall" and check out our new "Kitty Treats"

We are hoping some caring individuals would like to contribute to the cost of getting HAR bumper stickers printed.
We are currently in need of crates, large and small, used to transport animals from the pound to their foster carers and vet appointments. Also large wire style pens to house sick, injured or quarantine animals.
Winter is well and truely on it's way and some of our fosters really need coats to see out the colder months. Donations of wool, fleecey fabrics, wadding, buttons, elastic and other notions appreciated. Also any help from sewers or Knitters to produce coats would be great too!
Gates and fencing materials needed.
Volunteers are required to transport animals from Upper Hunter to Newcastle and the Central Coast to Newcastle.
