PRIVATE SURRENDERS & LISTING ON DOGS AND CATS BY DONATION
Every day HAR receives phone calls and emails from people asking us to take their dogs and cats into foster care and find them new homes. Some days we receive more people wanting to surrender animals than people wanting to adopt which is very disheartening. Some people are genuinely unable to keep their dog or cat due to financial hardship. Others may have ended up with an elderly relative's pet after they died or gone into care. However on many occasions their owners just want to be saved the expense, inconvenience or guilt of taking it to the Pound.
We strongly suggest in addition to contacting us you also try some of the advice given in the links below.

Please understand many of the breed rescues are also full so they may not be able to accept your animal.
They may however be able to offer assistance such as listing them on their website.
Private Surrenders
The priority for HAR is rescue animals facing euthanasia at local pounds. Acceptance of surrender animals into our care to be looked after by volunteer foster carers is dependent on a number of factors, most importantly the availability of an appropriate foster carer. This is the time of year when all pounds have an influx of animals. The pounds we work with are constantly full to capacity, as are our dedicated foster carers, so we are currently rarely able to accept private surrenders. Please complete the relevant form below.
All private surrenders must pass committee members approval - in addition a $40 surrender fee is required if animal is accepted into HAR care.
For private surrender applications we require all information listed below- please call only after submitting the relevant form below and waiting minimum 3 working days for a response- this will give us time to approach carers to see if we have any available space in care, please fill in forms below as first point of contact. If we have no places in care for the animal we can still utilise this form to advertise your pet on our By Donation Page subject to the conditions below.

Conditions for listing on
'Dogs and Cats By Donation' Page
PLEASE NOTE HAR IS UNABLE TO TAKE PETS ADVERTISED ON THIS PAGE INTO FOSTER CARE. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO CARE FOR THE ANIMAL UNTIL A HOME CAN BE FOUND. We ask all advertisers to list a donation or amount for the animal and request that should this money not be needed to cover vet work you donate the funds to HAR or another animal rescue group. HAR will not advertise puppies/kittens without ensuring the mother will be desexed to avoid further unwanted litters.
If the animal in question has not had the standard vet work completed HAR may be able to assist in arranging for the work to be done, vet work however will be at the owners expense but you are free to advertise a donation amount that will reimburse you for the expenses. The Companion Animal Act requires that cats and dogs be microchipped before rehoming and it is the responsibility of the advertiser to ensure this is complied with.
Please do not contact us telling us you are moving into a unit in a couple of days or weeks time (or moving interstate or overseas) and need the animal gone by then. The animals advertised here need to be given time so that the most suitable home can be found for them and that can often take a while!
We reserve the right to remove the advert at any time if we find you have misrepresented your animal's physical state, behaviour or temperament to us. If at any time HAR is unable to contact you because you have changed your phone number and/or email address then we have no option but to remove your ad to avoid potential adoptors being disappointed and having their time wasted! The ad will however be reinstated if you contact us again with your current details.
We will continue to advertise your pet until it finds a suitable home so, in order to keep the information on this page current, we would appreciate notification if and when the animal has been rehomed. This applies regardless of whether the rehoming was initiated by the advert on this website or by other means. Adverts older than 6 months without any further communication to indicate the animal is still looking for a home will be removed.
DOGS
We will need you to send an email to with a digital photo of your pet attached (jpeg format and under 1mb please). Please include their details eg. name, age, breed, sex, size and also whether it is desexed, microchipped, lifetime registered, on heartworm and flea prevention and has up-to-date vaccinations.
A brief story with information about their personality and why it has become necessary to rehome them also helps. Remember also to include your own name, phone number and e-mail address for enquiries and the suburb in NSW where the pet can be visited.
CATS
We require to sight proof of desexing, microchip details prior to the cat or kitten being listed on our website. We prefer these documents scaned or photographed and submited to catcarers@hotmail.com alternatively they may be posted by mail on request. Please also let us know if the animal is Lifetime Registered with council and/ or has current vaccination - these will help your cat at finding a new home as it is something the new owners will not need to complete themselves.
We require 2-3 photographs of your cat- the nicer the photographs the better chance you have of finding a suitable home quickly and we trust each of the fields asked for in the form below will be completed accurately.
Our priority is rescueing and fostering cats and kittens from local pounds. Should a space become available in foster care for cats or kittens listed on our "Local Cats looking for home privately" page after the listing has been published HAR will notify you to see if you would like the cat or kitten surrendered to HAR. If this occurs HAR will still require a $40 surrender fee to bring the cat or kitten into our care.
