Where does the adoption fee go?
All of the cats and kittens that come into our care must be microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, wormed and treated for fleas before going to their forever homes. The majority of cats and kittens we receive into care, often from pounds, have had none of this done. Every so often we have cats or kittens who have been abused and need extra vet care for rehabilitation so they are healthy to be adopted.
Standard vet work and costs covered by HAR:
Microchipping
$20 - $30
Vaccination
$50 - $80
Desexing
$50 - $120
Initial Worming
$2 - $5
Initial flea treatment
$10
Vet check
$30 - $48
average cost $200 per cat /kitten
In addition to above costs:
Monthly kitten vaccinations for kittens remaining in care till five months of age
$50 - $80
Monthly in care flea and worming treatments
$5-$15
And when needed:
Cat Flu Medication (plus 2 weeks in care in quarantine)
$30 - $40
Standard vet consult charge
$20 - $48
Emergency vet consult charge
$148
Weekend emergency vet consult charge
$296
Observation for 12 hours at emergency vets
$78
Weekend observation for 12 hours at emergency vets

Our volunteer foster carers are just that, and although we think they deserve to be paid for all the effort and hard work that goes into caring for homeless cats and kittens they do it all for love. Carers pay for their foster cat and/or kittens food, kitty litter, bedding, toys, collar and provide transport to veterinary appointments for as long as it takes for the foster cat or kitten to find the perfect forever home. The adoption fee you pay when you adopt a dog or cat from Hunter Animal Rescue goes directly to covering vet costs to enable us to continue doing the work we do. Kitten carers often have up to five kittens in their care at any one time and we are very greatful for the amazing dedication they have to saving cats and kittens in the Hunter.
Costs covered by foster carers:
feeding a 6 week old kitten
minimum $1 a day
feeding a 12 week old kitten
minimum $2 a day
cat food for one adult cat for one week
minimum $1 a day
our dedication to saving our feline
friends from euthanasia
priceless
We are very grateful to great staff at The Vet Maryland, Belmont Veterinary Hospital, Georgetown Veterinary Clinic and Motto Farm Veterinary Hospital who help us with discounted vet costs which are vital in allowing us to continue the work we do. Even with their help and support, the adoption fee often does not cover the costs associated with preparing the cat or kitten for adoption. We also have associated costs of advertising, website, promotional materials, insurance, phone bills etc
If you have already adopted a dog or cat from us please consider a regular donation in honour of your new furry family member. We have rehomed almost 1000 animals, from the beginning of this year to June we have rehomed over 50 cats and kittens and if every family that has adopted a HAR cat, kitten, dog or pup donated $20 on their pets birthday or anniversary, it would make a huge contribution to our running costs and allow us to continue giving great dogs and cats their second chance.
Every little bit helps!
Our carers are always very appreciative of goods that are donated towards feeding, housing, cleaning or sheltering their foster animals. Please email us if you have goods to donate to arrange drop off/ pick up.
$15 donation will provide a cat or kitten with a month of flea treatment.
